New Dorm Coming in 2017

Southwind broke ground this fall on the first phase of the Master Plan, a new camper dorm. This new dorm will help meet the growing demand at Southwind as occupancy rates over the last several years have averaged over 100%. This new dorm will also quadruple the number of handicap accessible rooms and bathrooms in camp and will provide the additional cabin space needed for Southwind to host a week of YoungLives camping. Additionally, the new dorm will allow Southwind to convert one of its existing dorms into work crew and summer staff housing, providing this important discipleship program a much needed housing improvement. The new dorm is slated to be operational by the fall of 2017.

Sports Pavilion Coming for Summer

Another exciting change is the construction of a new sports pavilion.  This pavilion will be equipped for basketball and volleyball, will have porches along three sides for spectator viewing, and will provide a wonderful area for camp events that is protected from the elements.  Construction on the sports pavilion will be ongoing through the summer of 2017 and it should be completed for use in the fall.

How You Can Help

We encourage you to check back to our Development page often, as we will be posting videos documenting the progress of both of these projects. Both the new dorm and the sports pavilion are improvements that impact the experience of guests at Southwind. If you would like to contribute to or have questions about these projects and the Master Plan, feel free to contact our Development Director, Elizabeth McRae at or contact Southwind directly at 352.288.2500.

Camp Development Principles

  • After construction is complete, Young Life camps are financially self-sufficient. All operational expenses, maintenance, administrative costs and funded depreciation are paid from camp revenue generated by the camper fee. Only major capital projects require fundraising after the initial purchase or construction.
  • We only grow as thoughtful and generous gifts allow...
  • Young Life camps have a long-standing policy to first raise the funds and then to develop new projects, facilities and amenities.
  • This is so the camp fee that summer and school season guests pay is minimized to reflect true operating costs. This practice also allows us to develop new projects to a standard of excellence.
